Jay Z --Music Video Analysis

Jay Z- 99 Problems

In this video there is not a lot of scopophillia used, this is probably because in the song he says that a 'bitch' is not one of his problems, whilst showing other problems that he has in the video. The video also shows people having problems with women when he says 'a bitch ain't one' . The music is matched up very closely with the visuals and even the cuts are timed up with the music. The video shows the 'Gangsta' lifestyle because of the Mis-En-Scene the clothes that they wear, the criminal activity and being in trouble with the police. When Jay Z talks bout the paparazzi, it is matched up with the police taking mugshots of criminals implying that before they were famous they were still having there photos taken, but by the police not the paparazzi. The video is a montage of several unrelated clips edited together however in the context of the song the video makes sense.

The video is filmed in black and white making everything seem grimier and more urban, it also makes the seem to be in more of a ghetto style. This matches up the setting of the video which is Brooklyn, there is several references to 'Gangsta' lifestyle within the video including
  • Shootings
  • Balaclava
  • Basketball
