Major And Independent Record Labels

Within the Music there are two types of record labels, major records and independent labels. There are four major labels and these are:
  • Sony BMG
  • Warner Music Group
  • Universal Music Group

  • EMI

Sony BMG was founded in March 2004 and the headquarters is in New York.
Sony BMG has several subsidiary companies including
  • Columbia Records
  • Jive Records
  • J Records
  • Sonic Wave America

Warner Bros. Music group was founded in 1958 and it's headquarters is also in New York.
Warner Bros. subsidiary companies include
  • Jet Life Recordings
  • Maybach Music Group
  • 143 Records
  • Sire Records
Universal Music group was founded in originally in 1934 and it's headquarters is in Santa Monica, California.
The Universal Music Group has many subsidiary companies including
  • Universal Music Group Nashville
  •  Verve Music Group
  •  Decca Label Group
  • Universal Music Latin
EMI was founded in 1934 and the headquarters are in London.
Subsidiary of EMI are
  • Capitol Records
  • Blue Note Records
  • EMI Gospel
  • Venture Records
Whereas mainstream/major labels tend to be more about making money and tend to exist solely for that reason whereas smaller independent labels are more about actually making music and less about making money.  Independent record labels include:
  • Fierce Panda Records - Founded in 1994 in London, UK
  • Snakes And Ladders records - Founded in 2005 in London, UK
  •  Andmoresound - Founded in 1998 in Glasgow, Scotland
The record Label that we feel would best be suited to BooSH is Sony BMG this is mainly because Calvin Harris, a similar act to BooSH is signed to them. We feel that musically BooSH could be very similar musically to Calvin Harris and we feel that Sony is the best place for him to go to. Choosing Sony means that we will have to market it carefully and similarly to how a real artist on the Sony record label would be marketed also the album must also have the sony logo on it.
